This rule is implementing the Radon Industry Licensing Act

The first step in applying for a Professional or Technician License is to complete an IEMA approved Qualification Course.

• Radon Measurement or Mitigation Qualifying Courses
  This list provides updated information on radon courses offered in Illinois.

The second step is to apply for and pass an Illinois approved license/qualification exam.

IEMA is no longer providing radon qualifications examinations. In accordance with the Programmatic Conditions of the State Indoor Radon Grant that requires state grant recipients shall in the absence of an existing state-run process established under a state’s regulatory requirements for credentialing of radon service providers (e.g., state license), the required public list shall only be satisfied by referring consumers to the two currently-recognized, national radon proficiency programs, National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP) and National Radon Safety Board (NRSB). IEMA in accordance with the Requirements for Issuance or Renewal of Licenses (32 Illinois Administrative Code 422.60) approves the qualification exams of the NRPP and NRSB. NOTE: All individuals applying for any radon measurement license (technician or professional)

MUST take a Radon Measurement Specialist/ Professional exam. All individuals applying for any radon mitigation license (technician or professional)

MUST take a Radon Mitigation Specialist/ Professional exam. IEMA will not accept passing score reports from any technician exams to meet this licensing requirement.

Additional organizations who wish to provide radon qualification exams who are compliant with the credentialing requirements outlined in ISO/IEC 17024:2012, Conformity assessment — General requirements for bodies operating certification of persons, may contact the Agency at 217-782-1325 to submit their credentialing certification and exams for approval.

To assist applicants IEMA provides guidance on writing Quality Assurance Programs.  The instructions in this guidance document describe the areas and information needed by the Agency to evaluate an applicant’s Quality Assurance Program for a professional license.  The regulations require licensees to develop and implement written policies and procedures, which ensure compliance with the Radon Industry Licensing Act and 32 Illinois Administrative Code 422.  The Appendices provide guidance and a sample Quality Assurance Program that an applicant may choose to use in their program.
