IPEM Application Review Process

When the applicant's application has been received, the following checklist will be used to ensure that the application is complete:

If the checklist is complete, the application will be forwarded to the IPEM Application Review Committee for review.  If the checklist is not complete, the application will be returned to the applicant with a detailed list of revisions, along with a deadline to re-submit.

Who is on the IPEM Application Review-Committee?

The IPEM Application Review Committee consists of the following:

  • IEMA Director - or designee appointed by the Director
  • IESMA President - or designee appointed by President
  • IEMA Training Program Manager
  • IESMA Professional Standards Committee Chair
  • IESMA Training and Education Committee Chair

Application Review Process

The IPEM Application Review Committee meets on a quarterly basis (four times per year), beginning in January, to review all new and renewal applications. The committee reviews submitted applications and renewal applications to verify that each meets the requirements established by the program. Upon verification and approval, letters of notification are sent to each successful applicant advising him/her of approval. A second letter of notification is sent to each successful candidate's supervisor.

IEMA presents each successful candidate an Illinois Professional Emergency Manager Certificate and a lapel pin at the annual IEMA Training Summit. The certificate is valid for a three-year period.

Successful renewal applications are presented with a seal to be affixed to the applicant's certificate.

What if the IPEM Application Review Committee identifies any needed revisions prior to approval?

If the Committee identifies any needed revisions, the application will be returned to the applicant with a detailed list of revisions, along with a deadline to re-submit.

If the applicant does not re-submit within the deadline, the application is rejected.

Applicants are encouraged to re-submit a new application at a later date. Rejection of an application is not the end of the matter, but merely a step in the process.

What if the IPEM applicant needs additional time to submit their renewal application?

A one-year extension is available. This request must be submitted in writing to the IEMA State Training Officer no later than July 15 of the year that their application is to be renewed. The request must include detailed reasons why an extension is requested.  The reasons for the request will be reviewed by the Committee and the applicant will be notified of the decision.
