  Weather-Related Preparedness

Weather-related emergencies present the largest single category of emergency across the state as well as the greatest threat to the individual citizen.

Basic Preparedness

This page is intended to provide the citizen with direct access to critical information before, during and after a disaster impacts the state of Illinois, rather than having the user hunt through the vast array of pages within the IEMA web site. Click here for Basic Preparedness.

Flood Preparedness

Heat Preparedness

Heat is one of the most underrated and least understood of the deadly weather phenomena. In contrast to the visible, destructive and violent characteristics associated with deadly weather, like floods and tornadoes, a heat wave is a "silent killer". Heat deaths occur quietly, without headline-making destruction. Many people don't realize how deadly a heat wave can be. Click here for Heat Preparedness.

Lightning Preparedness

There are an estimated 25 million cloud-to-ground lightning flashes each year in the United States, nearly 650,000 of which occur in Illinois alone. Lightning can be fascinating to watch, but it is also extremely dangerous – it is the underrated killer. Few people really understand the dangers of lightning. Many people don’t act promptly to protect their lives, property, and the lives of others. The first step in solving this potentially life-threatening problem is through education. Tornado Preparedness

Winter Weather Preparedness

Severe winter storms can cause widespread damage and disruption. Heavy snow often results in paralyzed transportation systems, automobile accidents due to slippery roads and stranded vehicles. When accompanied by intense winds and extreme cold, snow can isolate entire towns. These conditions are a dangerous threat to life. Glazing from ice storms topples utility lines and poles and makes travel virtually impossible. Even walking may be a dangerous venture. Click Here for Winter Weather Preparedness
